The Importance of Etiquette in Taoist Practices

Understanding Taoist Etiquette: Norms and Practices

Taoist etiquette refers to the behavior norms observed by Taoists in their daily life. These norms represent the minimum standards of conduct for Taoists. Violators are considered to have poor conduct and it belongs to the Taoist rituals.

The content of Taoist etiquette is very complicated, ranging from daily greetings to walking in and out. Everything has a certain etiquette. At the same time, the external etiquette style of a Taoist practitioner or devotee is also a reflection of their moral cultivation.

Two Aspects of Taoist Etiquette

Taoist etiquette can be divided into two aspects:

  1. Li (Etiquette): Refers to general manners and conduct.
  2. Yi (Ceremony): Refers to rituals and ceremonies, collectively known as the ritual of fasting and offering.
These practices are not only a way to promote the Great Dao, but also a form of learning and practicing Taoism.

Daily Practices: Fasting and Offering

Fasting and offering are compulsory courses in the daily life of Taoists. The etiquette of fasting and offering is very complex, including:
  • Burning incense
  • Bowing
  • Performing Taoist rituals
When burning incense, it is important to also offer sacrifices to the gods.
